The telecom subscriber base in India stood at 931.95 million in February 2014: TRAI

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telecom subscriber base in India increased from 922.04 million at the end of January 2014 to 931.95 million at the end of February 2014 registering a growth of 1.08 per cent.

The share of urban subscribers has declined from 59.86 per cent in January 2014 to 59.77 per cent in February 2014. Meanwhile, the share of rural subscribers has increased from 40.14 per cent to 40.23 per cent during the same period. As per TRAI, overall teledensity increased from 74.50 per cent in January 2013 to 75.23 per cent in February 2014.

Further, the country’s total wireless subscriber base increased from 893.31 million at the end of January 2014 to 903.36 million at the end of February, 2014, registering a monthly growth of 1.12 per cent. The share of urban wireless subscribers has declined from 59.25 per cent to 59.16 per cent.  However, the share of rural wireless subscribers has increased from 40.75 per cent in January 2014 to 40.84 per cent in February 2014. The overall wireless teledensity in India reached 72.92 per cent for the period under review.

As of February 2014, private operators hold 89.11 per cent of the wireless market, while Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited together hold 10.89 per cent market share.
